Calgary Civic Plaza Municipal Complex + Site Modernization
Client City of Calgary
Location Calgary | Alberta | Canada
The City of Calgary initiated a planning and architectural study to develop design approaches for renovations to the Calgary Municipal Building and Plaza. Working closely with Diamond Schmitt Architects, HFKS Architects, and City stakeholders, O2 developed solutions for revitalizing the plaza to address accessibility and safety, building integration, materials and site furnishings, lighting, public art, and programming opportunities. Approaches to integrating adjacent Olympic Plaza into a unified public space were explored. Activating adjacent streets and integrating the Epcor Centre for Performing Arts future revitalization work, were address comprehensively in the design.
On the east side of the building, the team developed solutions for the interface between the Municipal Building and future East Village developments. This included a pedestrian +15 walkway over the existing LRT tracks, a series of retail buildings, and a new public park.
The goal of the project was to invigorate and animate the municipal complex site to create new opportunities for the City to meet a growing need for downtown cultural spaces.
