Kinbrook Island Provincial Park Revitalization Plan

Client Alberta Community Development
Location Brooks | Alberta | Canada

Kinbrook Island Provincial Park is recognized as a prominent recreational and ecological destination for the Town of Brooks and surrounding area. Surrounded by a wetland of national significance and with a dense forest canopy and subtle changes in elevation throughout, the campground offers a private, rustic camping and recreational experience rarely encountered in southern Alberta.

Presently, the demand on Kinbrook Island Park’s facilities exceeds its capacity at peak use periods. This trend is problematic and is projected to continue as the local and provincial populations increase. Many of the existing facilities within the park were developed in the 1970s and 1980s and are now in need of refurbishment, due to infrastructure deterioration, or are in need of alteration due to changing requirements and increasing visitor use. As the provincial park is situated on an island, spatial relationships, appropriate use of space, and efficiency are paramount when considering design scenarios.

Under separate contracts in 2008, then 2014, O2 was retained to complete an assessment of the existing park infrastructure and to develop a plan to guide the upgrading and expansion of the park’s amenities to address the increasing demands on the park. O2 developed design solutions for the Kinbrook Island Revitalization Plan that increase functionality and improve the current interpretive infrastructure. The plan protects the rich ecological habitat and the unique, high-quality recreational experiences offered throughout the provincial park.
