High River shows how any city can reduce car dependency

High River shows how any city can reduce car dependency

High River is recovering from the 2013 flood and its new walkable downtown has transformed the community. Woonerfs, new plantings, and comfortable places to hang out have set the stage for a vibrant space full of buskers and farmers market vendors.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says that at first he was skeptical, but since then, he's done a complete 180. "You can do it, and I don’t care if you’re High River, Calgary, or Cayley, Alberta. You can do it—and it’s the right thing to do.”

"We have hundreds and hundreds of orphaned spaces throughout our downtown, and if we just saw opportunities like this one and transformed them, we’d be the best city in the world."

The corporation recently hired Calgary-based O2 Planning + Design, and Vlan, a landscape architectural firm in Montreal, to help craft the vision for the park. Alberta-based Beakerhead science, art and engineering programming organizers are also being consulting on how science, technology, engineering, arts and math can be incorporated in year-round outdoor programming at the park."

Timing ‘perfect’ for redevelopment of Calgary’s Eau Claire Market Mall

Timing ‘perfect’ for redevelopment of Calgary’s Eau Claire Market Mall

In a city known for endless urban sprawl, Calgary’s core has always struggled to support an urban community.
