Trail + Backcountry Facility Design Guidelines

Client Parks Canada, Mountain Parks Division
Location Alberta | Canada

O2 prepared the Trail and Back Country Design Guidelines manual, developed to establish best practices for the development and maintenance of Parks Canada back country trails and facilities.

The firm developed a hierarchy in conjunction with the Park’s existing zoning considerations to distinguish zones based on infrastructure and the experiential characteristics of the area.

Combining revised principles from various Parks Canada policies, the firm drafted, designed, and redeveloped many construction details for best practice trail construction including: drainage structures, retaining walls, stairs, ladders, benches, and railings. Construction details and management strategies for best practice were developed for bridge construction, ski and equestrian trails, trail reclamation, campground facilities, waste management, food caches, kiosk and signage details, trail reclamation, and construction materials.
