University Hall Exterior Rehabilitation

The dramatic topography of the University of Lethbridge campus is a crucial component that defines the institution's culture. Central to the campus is University Hall, designed by architect Arthur Erickson in 1971. His vision was to create a distinctive setting for learning and innovation by building on the stunning landscape. About 50 years later, the University identified a need to refurbish the building’s exterior and surrounding landscape.

O2 worked with the University to restore the landscape architecture, and developed a plan that respected Erickson’s original vision. The delicate prairie landscape was restored through careful soil remediation and re-planting. Along the building edge, deteriorating planters presented safety concerns. In their place, cascading sculptural rock gardens now provide a low maintenance, sustainable solution that is drawn from the regional landscape and respects the materiality and integrity of the original design.
