Bow to Bluff
Hillhurst /Sunnyside LRT Corridor Revitalization Initiative
Client The City of Calgary
Location Calgary | Alberta | Canada
The Bow to Bluff — Hillhurst/Sunnyside LRT Corridor Revitalization Initiative provided an overarching, long-term community centered vision and functional framework to guide future development throughout the Bow to Bluff corridor. This initiative created a new standard for consulting teams in The City of Calgary. The "installation engagement" approach, developed by O2’s design team, demonstrates how citizen-based initiatives can help facilitate great public spaces through innovative stakeholder engagement processes and placemaking activities.
The resultant Urban Design Framework for the revitalization of the Bow to Bluff corridor focused on highly specific desires and unique concerns of the community. This community engagement process re-oriented the focus and direction of how The City of Calgary views public realm enhancements.
The engagement process is viewed as one of the most successful place-based engagement processes in Calgary’s history, with over 2,500 citizens being engaged in just seven weeks, generating over 2,000 individual ideas. The project was the recipient of the 2013 Canadian Institute of Planners award for New and Emerging Planning Initiatives.
