Exhibition Lands

Client City of Edmonton
Location Edmonton | Alberta | Canada

As the City’s second largest urban infill site, in a premier location close to downtown, LRT and transit, the river valley, a vibrant park area and green space amenities, this is an opportunity made for Edmonton and its big ideas.

Edmonton’s Exhibition Lands have been one of the most important cultural landmarks in the city since it’s inception. The site includes the Edmonton Expo Centre, Northlands Coliseum, the Northlands Urban Farm, Northlands Racetrack and Casino and Borden Park. This facility has served as a hub for Klondike Days, expositions, fairs, festivals, and other regional activities such 1879. Recent changes have opened up vast areas of the 160 ha site with the impending demolition of the Coliseum, and relocation of the Northlands Racetrack and Casino.

Recognizing the opportunity, the City identified a need to reinvent and reinvigorate the Exhibition Lands in a way that supports the surrounding community. O2 was retained to lead the revitalization and engagement activities and create a new vision for the site.

O2 led an extensive city-wide engagement process that invited bold ideas from the development community and interested parties to envision the future of the site. The resulting vision creates the space for a new mixed use urban community, where the site’s proximity to the city’s network of open spaces, active and mass transportation connections, unique local and regional amenities, and history of gathering seed exciting opportunities to live, work and play in the heart of North Edmonton.

Through providing coordinated approaches to the redevelopment and intensification of mature areas, and strategically identifying a potent collection of attractive anchor uses, the project will link the site’s current and past activities with new and innovative developments that help invigorate the surrounding areas, and all of Northeast Edmonton.
