Western Securities is dedicated to pursuing innovation focusing on first-rate urban design, streetscape and public spaces. The vision for the Stadium Shopping Centre redevelopment is to transform a lowintensity, strip mall into a vibrant, 800,000 s.f. mixed-use hub—a new destination in Calgary. Located along a major corridor, and within the vicinity of the Foothills Medical Centre and the University of Calgary campus, this redevelopment’s design is grounded on the principles of healthy community building.
O2 is providing the planning approach, urban design and landscape architecture for the six-acre shopping district, public realm and surrounding streetscapes. The large central plaza features a water feature that provides seasonal play and repose. The space is layered with amenities for year-round festivities such as multiple seating types including a large sculptural rock feature, an overhead canopy/stage, and play area.
A skating rink and sophisticated lighting will bring life to the space during winter, while flower markets and outdoor film screenings enliven the space during shoulder seasons.
Intense engagement was conducted with the City of Calgary, University Heights community, and institutional and community stakeholders to achieve positive synergies and cross-functionality between the different uses on the site and within the surrounding area. The design strategy focused on how program elements functioned as a community while ensuring the success of each component. As a result, the new live-work-shop community will be energized with public space, neighbourhood amenities, and places to enjoy the outdoors.
